John E. Butler was the second oldest son of Walter Butler. Born on November 28, 1888, he attended St. Thomas College (now the University of St. Thomas, Saint Paul, Minnesota) and the Culver Military Academy in Indiana. He served in World War 1 in France. He was married twice: first to Margaret Thompson in March 1915 and after her death in 1920, he married Margaret McCabe in October 1921. No children. John E. Butler passed away on March 28, 1927.
