Joseph Novak

Occupation: 

Dale and Bumgardner payroll. Joseph Novak worked as a laborer on grading the Capitol grounds. He was born in Poland in 1857 and came to America in 1892.

Most of the workers who constructed the Minnesota Capitol belonged to unions. However, it is not clear whether St. Paul laborers were organized during the period when the Capitol was built nor how many laborers or which jobs were represented by a union between 1896 and 1907. So Novak's union status is currently unknown.

John Kalka

Occupation: 

Dale and Bumgardner payroll. John Kalka worked as a laborer on the grading of the Capitol grounds. He was born in Poland in 1853 and came to St. Paul in about 1882.

August Okoniewski

Occupation: 

1903 City Directory. August Okoniewski was born in Poland in 1869 and emigrated in 1888. He worked on the Capitol as a laborer but later became a blacksmith and worked at that trade in St. Paul for many years. In the 1930 Census he gave his occupation as "blacksmith" working at a an auto repair shop.

Martin Mierva

Occupation: 

1904 City Directory and Capitol Staff.. Martin Mierva was born in 1845 in Poland and emigrated in 1870. He worked on the Capitol as a laborer and is also listed as a janitor at the new building in February of 1905. He reported in the 1920 Census that he was working as a laborer for the City at the age of 77. He and his wife, Mary, raised a large family in this house, (which was later torn down for the freeway), and was still living here in 1930 when he was 90 years old.

Paul Paytal

Occupation: 

Dale and Bumgardner Payroll. Paul Paytal was born in Poland in 1861 and emigrated in 1881. He was a charter member of Local 120 and an activist in the union. Paytal and his wife raised a large family in St. Paul while he worked as a teamster, and he died here in 1930.

Paul Szeremeta

Occupation: 

1905 Payroll and Census, 1904 City Directory. Paul Szeremeta was born in Poland in 1872, came to St. Paul in 1903 along with his wife, Francis, and went to work on the Capitol as a "marble polisher." They spent the rest of their lives in the city raising a large family and continued to work as a marble polisher for local companies at least until 1930. He died here in 1956.

Jacob Gondek

Occupation: 

Dale and Bumgardner Payroll, 1905 Butler Bros. Payroll, 1904 St. Paul City Directory and 1900 Census. Jacob Gondak was born in Poland in 1849 and emigrated in 1868. He worked as a laborer for Dale and Bumgardner.
